The cock and the bull

August 28, 2017

Out of nowhere I bumped into the logo of The Blue Rooster restaurant of chef Shaul Ben Aderet that's been operating in north Tel Aviv for some years, and something didn't feel alrigh. I was convinced that I saw it somewhere -

Of course! It has an extraordinary resemblance to Damien Hirst's piece 'Cock and Bull' -

Cock and Bull, Damien Hirst

'Cock and Bull Stories' were stories that were told among travelers and inn dwellers on the coaches road of the mid 17th Century England. Two of those inns which still exist in Stony Stratford in northern Buckinghamshire are named - exactly - The Cock and The Bull

Today Hirst's artpiece stands up high in the center of the Tramshed restaurant in London, from where it reminds the patrons of what there is on their plates -

Hey, finish your meal!

Apparently, you could think that for sure the Israeli restaurant got the inspiration for the logo from Hirst, but the truth is that The Blue Rooster opened on the beginning of 2011 while Hirst sanked the animals in Formaldehyde especially for Tramshed's inauguration on mid 2012. Very interesting...

And about an actual blue rooster? On the summer of 2013 the German artist Katharina Fritsch placed a 5 meters tall blue rooster on top of 'The Fourth Plinth', an empty plinth which is located on one of Trafalgar Square's corners which hosts temporary art (and a fascinating story by itself). The giant cock stood still for two years until 2015.
